Recently, two consecutive phase transitions were observed, upon cooling, in an antiferromagnetic spinel GeNi$$_2$$O$$_4$$ at $$T_{N1}=12.1$$ K and $$T_{N2}=11.4$$ K, respectively. Using unpolarized and polarized elastic neutron scattering we show that the two transitions are due to the existence of frustrated minority spins in this compound. Upon cooling, at $$T_{N1}$$ the spins on the $$<$$111$$>$$ kagom$'e$ planes order ferromagnetically in the plane and antiferromagnetically between the planes (phase I), leaving the spins on the $$<$$111$$>$$ triangular planes that separate the kagom$'e$ planes frustrated and disordered. At the lower $$T_{N2}$$, the triangular spins also order in the $$<$$111$$>$$ plane (phase II). We also present a scenario involving exchange interactions that qualitatively explains the origin of the two purely magnetic phase transitions.

Gravity-induced diffusion of isotope atoms in monoatomic solid Se

A strong gravitational field resulted in the gravity-induced diffusion (sedimentation) of isotope atoms in monoatomic solid Se. The layer crystalline morphology consisting of three zones of the fine-grained crystals, the long crystals and feather-shaped crystals grown parallel to gravity direction appeared in the specimen ultracentrifuged at 0.8-1 million G and at 190 $$^{circ}$$C. Change in concentration ratio $$^{82}$$Se/$$^{76}$$Se of $$>$$ 0.8% was observed in the grown crystalline region. These results show an evidence for sedimentation of substitutional atoms in solid via self-diffusion, and suggest possibility of application to control of impurity and crystalline state as well as to isotope separation.

The crystallization kinetics and nucleation mechanism of a bulk metallic glassforming alloy Zr$$_{46.75}$$Ti$$_{8.25}$$Cu$$_{7.5}$$Ni$$_{10}$$Be$$_{27.5}$$ (vit4) in the entire supercooled liquid region (SLR) is investigated using in situ high-pressure and high-temperature X-ray diffraction with synchrotron radiation, which allows us for the time to simultaneously determine the crystallization kinetics and phase evolution of a metallic liquid as a function of time under high pressure. The results are summarized in a pressure-time-temperature-transformation (PTTT) diagram with two time scales.

A New approach for three-dimensional atomic-image reconstruction from a single-energy photoelectron hologram

A "scattering pattern matrix" method is proposed here to overcome the difculties presented by photoelectron holography, such as forward-scattering and multi-energyproblems. This method makes it possible to reconstruct a three-dimensional atomic arrangement from a single-energy hologram. We have utilized the "scattering pattern matrix" that includes the angular variation of the scattered object waves, and we have adopted a specialaverage process and the gradient projection method for minimizing the mean-squared error. The reconstruction of the Si bulk structure is demonstrated by using an experimental Si(111) 2s single-energy hologram.
